Smart Moves, Smart Choices

Despite a decline in overall drug abuse rates among teens, prescription drugs remain popular among younger users. According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, 6.8 million teens believe prescription pain relievers – even if not prescribed by a doctor – are not addictive and that nearly one-quarter of 12th graders report that they have abused prescription drugs by the time they graduate from high school. To respond to this growing rate of prescription drug abuse among middle and high school students nationwide, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and Prichard® (division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) is launching the “Smart Moves, Smart Choices” campaign this week. This web-based educational program features an online news series hosted by a teen and produced by McNeil/Lehrer Productions’ the. News. Each video takes a news-based approach and is accompanied by downloadable science and language arts curricula.
