Name of Activity: Funkytown

Purpose of Activity: A fun and exciting warmup activity to prelude your lesson.

Prerequisites: Go over the different movements prior to playing music. Have students oraganized in horizontal lines with teacher in front. This provides best results.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: CD or tape player.

Recommended music: Funkytown by Lipps, Inc.

Beginning dance formation: Horizontal lines.

Description of Idea

When the music starts:

Move to the students' right (your left) 3 steps....one..two..three..clap. Then go to students' left..one..two..three..clap.

Continue with "one..two..three clap" until singers sing "talk about it, talk about it, talk about it"....during this sequence place arms in front of body...start on students' right (your left) and go from right to left, then left to right using your hands to mimic talking.

On the break between "talk about it" put your hands on knees and move knees apart then in while crossing hands on knees.

Do the hands "talk about it" gesture again after the "hands on knees" break.

At this point in the song (after "talk about it" segment)...the singers will sing "got to move on"...continue with one..two..three clap.. right, then one..two..three..clap left, keep going right then left then right until...

The song breaks and there is four segments of 6 heavy drum beats. When you get to this point STOP..put hands on thighs and hit thighs 5 times then clap...

1,2,3,4,5 clap
1,2,3,4,5 clap
1,2,3,4,5 clap
1,2,3,4,5, clap

Next is the Funkytown verse "won't you take me to Funkytown".. do jumping jacks during this verse.

When the Funkytown singing stops and the instrumental takes over....raise the roof (raise hands above head in up and down motion)then lower the roof (hands below body in up and down movement), then raise the roof again. Then proceed into next movement listed.

Before Funkytown verse starts again, there is a heavy drum beat...during this put feet together and hop from left to right...then forward and back. Hop with the beat.

When Funkytown verse starts again resume jumping jacks and continue until verse ends.

After Funkytown verse ends continue with "1,2,3 clap right", then "1,2,3, clap left"...continue this until the "talk about it" verse.

At "talk about it" verse..STOP..hands in front and mimic talking...right, then left.

At the "got to move on" verse...raise the roof, then lower the roof, then raise it again.

After the "got to move on verse" STOP...hands on thighs and at the heavy drum beat slap thighs 5 times then clap.

1,2,3,4,5 clap
1,2,3,4,5 clap
1,2,3,4,5 clap
1,2,3,4,5, clap

Then do Jumping Jacks during Funkytown verse.

Love this idea as a dance warmup for my afterschool dance club. This is great coordination and exercise to get the kids focused and ready to learn new dance steps at the end of the day.

From my understanding of safe dance, repeated jumping jacks is not safe for children and it adds excessive weight and pressure to their knees, hips and ankles... they are ok to do, just not repeatedly!
