Name of Activity: Fitness & Math Challenge

Academic content: Math

Purpose of Activity: To reinforce math concepts while at the same time having the students increase their heart rates and learn about fitness concepts.

Suggested Grade Level: 4-6

Materials Needed: Pencils, worksheets, various equipment suitable to facilitate the stations you choose.

Physical activity: Fitness related concepts

Description of Idea

Have each student find a partner as they come into the activity area. Set up 15 stations around the gym and develop a worksheet that will multiply the students score by different numbers. Challenge students to try to earn 1000 points.  Each station lasts 1 minute, and in between give the students 20 seconds to clean up their station, write down their score, and rotate with their partner.

Here are a few stations that have worked well for us along with the multipliers to have the students use. Make sure the students do not do the math at the stations. Do that afterwards or better yet have them do it in their classrooms.

  • Pogo sticks. (Multiply number of bounces by 2)
  • Single Jump Roping. (Number of jumps in a minute)
  • Pickleball paddles and balls. (Number of hits against a wall in a minute)
  • Vertical Jump Strings. (10 jump rope or streamer segments tied to a basketball support at various heights) (Number of ropes you are able to touch multiplied by 10)
  • Football Throw. (Hula Hoop attached to a volleyball standard, and a poly spot about 15 feet in front of the target) (Number of times you can throw the football through the hoop in a minute multiplied by 8)
  • Juggling Scarves. (Number of times you catch each scarf in a minute.  Cascade style with three scarfs, or two scarfs with one hand, multiplied by 3)
  • Golf Putting Green. (roll of Astro Turf with a 3, 5 and a 10 foot line, and a putting cup)
    • 3 foot putt = 25 points
    • 5 ft. = 50
    • 10 ft. = 100
  • Aerobic Bowling. (2 poly spots 15 feet apart.  1 bowling pin and a gator skin ball). 1 partner rolls the ball, and tries to knock down the pin,and the other partner stands behind the pin.  After each roll the partners switch, keep track of your own score. (Multiply final score by 7)
  • Push-ups. (Number of push ups in a minute multiplied by 7)
  • Sit- ups. (Correct sit-ups in a minute multiplied by 2)
  • Catch ball. Toss the catch ball back and forth with a partner.  Use the point values on the ends of the catch ball and multiply it by 3.
  • Basketball Shots. How many made in a minute multiplied by 4. (This can be done into a garbage can if you want).
  • Zoom Ball. How many times back and forth with a partner in a minute.
  • Jump - ups. (use a folded tumbling mat). How many times can you jump up on top a folded gym mat in a minute keeping your feet together.  (Multiply score by 3)
  • Handstands. (need tumbling mat and plenty of space--no spotters. (Multiply the number of seconds feet are off the ground by 50)

Math Skill Ideas:

What percentage of your score was Push- ups?

Make a bar graph showing the point values you earned for each event.

What was your average score at each station.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Jump rope - push wheel chair over a jump rope lying on the floor

Jump Strings - for students unable to jump, how many strings can you hit when throwing a yarn ball?

Aerobic Bowling - Attach a ramp to the wheelchair to help the roll the ball.

Ask a student from another class, or an older student to come and have them help the student that needs assistance.
