Name of Activity: Trivia Tag

Academic content: READING, etc.

Purpose of Activity: To have students work on some of their reading skills while being active.

Suggested Grade Level: 3rd-8th

Materials Needed: Laminated 3 x 5 index cards (with questions and answers) for approximately 1/3 of your class, cones to mark the playing area

Physical activity: Locomotor Skills

Description of Idea

Hand out approximately one third of your class a laminated 3 x 5 index card (cut corners off of cards for safety) with a question and answer. They are the chasers in this tag game. Have the students spread out in a safe manner in the general space bounded by the cones.

On the teachers signal the chasers are to move throughout the space trying to tag the others with their free hand. When a tag is made, both players stop, and the chaser reads the question from the card to the student who was tagged. If the answer is correctly given then that person is free to run. If the person who was tagged gives an incorrect answer or NO answer in 10 seconds, they are given the card and they are now the chaser. The student who asked the question is free. There are no time outs and no tag backs allowed.

Teaching Suggestions:

Have 2 questions per card, to allow the chasing person the choice of which one to ask

Have extra cards ready in case one or two are too easy

Remind students to speak clearly and come up to the teacher if any words are not understood

This activity works best when you integrate questions from the student's current area's of study, such as Geography, Math, Colonial America, Sports, Science, etc.
