Name of Best Practice: Mileage Club

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To promote exercise outside of P.E. class and to promote the better understanding of what cardiovascular activities are.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Log sheets, little plastic fitness feet, small chains, certificates.

Mileage Club

At the beginning of the year we teach our students about cardiovascular activity. Than we explain how to join the Mileage Club. Each sheet has 10 lines. For every mile of walking/jogging or 45 minutes of a cardiovascular activity they have their parents initial and date a line. There is a limit of 1 line per day.

After the sheet becomes full, they return it and are awarded a little plastic foot (it's about the size of your thumb nail). When they have completed 5 sheets (50 miles) they are awarded a chain to keep their feet on and a certificate. Every 50 miles they are awarded a new certificate with their total miles on it.

We also encourage the teachers and parents to participate in the program. This is a very low cost program. You can purchase 1000 feet for under $50. The log sheets and certificates I make on the computer.
