Students Teaching Key Concepts with Technology

I enlisted the help of some of my homeroom teachers who needed to incorporate technology into their science studies by asking them to have students author their own Power Point presentations that they would present during PE time to primary grades.

I did this in conjunction with our Red Ribbon Week activities and asked the 3-5th grade students to do presentations regarding the effects of drugs and alcohol based on what we discussed both in PE and in their homeroom science classes.

Along with the other teachers, we came up with guidelines on how many facts they needed to present, timing, graphics, voice recordings, reseach on the topic and assigned small groups for the project. The students worked on them during their class computer lab times with the assistance of the homeroom teachers. The presentations were sent to me for proofing and then the students were allowed to come to the gym during the PE times for the younger students to help with the actual presentations.

Not only did it help me by providing me with several presentation, but it reinforced the learning for the children who made the presentations as well as for the students who viewed the presentations to learn new information.

Variations:

If your access to technology is limited, have students each draw a picture/write a paragraph to share with younger students on a health/fitness related topic.

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

- Plan the project well in advance to allow students time to prepare the presentations.
- Find homeroom teachers who are enthusiastic about using technology!
- Needs coordination with other teachers but incorporates valuable concepts and skills.
- If presentations are good enough they should be presented to the local school board to help promote red ribbon week or the overall PE program.
