Name of Best Practice: Guardians of the Games

Rationale/Purpose of Event:

Our Physical Education classes were emphasizing characteristics of our sport education objectives.

1. Cooperative Learning - Teamwork
2. Responsible Leadership
3. Appreciate the rituals and traditions of sports/games
4. Enjoy the aesthetic value of movements and skills related to a sport.

We discussed our roles in preserving these ideals for the games of the future. NASPE Standard 5

Suggested Grade Level: 6-8

Materials Needed: Large sheets of paper to draw lifesize figures, Lamination material, Large sheets of cardboard to back the lifesize figures, Art supplies.

Guardians of the Games

Our 8th grade students were doing a social studies unit on China. We decided to integrate this lesson combining Physical Education, social studies, language arts and art.

We discussed the Terra Cotta Warriors of Xian as stone statues eternally guarding the burial of the Emperor, thus the title "Guardians of the Games".

Students created life sized figures in a sport activity. The figures were faceless to represent athletes or players of past present and future. They were created in full color. After laminated they were cut and applied to cardboard to allow them to stand up. (alas ~ the Terra cotta wariors).

On the chest of each figure, students created poetry in the style of the Tang Dynasty, which described how they would appreciate the ideals of the games and preserve and protect the games for future participants to enjoy.

The figures were placed along the fence of the PE field as a daily reminder of the students roles as Guardians of the Games.

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

By integrating this lesson with the other disciplines it provided a renewed interest by the classroom teachers for what we were doing in Physical Education.
